real-time mode

Is there something that will let me set the priority of an app so that it is guaranteed certain performance.

I have some audio that works great except that every 10-20 seconds it gets preempted by other apps and the sound "pops" a little bit.

Anyone know how to solve this? Anything similar the SGIs performer APIs.
