Ben,

depending on what you want to learn, you can find sources to at least two libraries, which read some audio file formats, including AIFF. One is called "sox" the other is made public by SGI, details escape me at the moment. Have a look at <http://sourceforge.net>.

If that is to easy for you, you could improve othe open projects like SndKit or MusicKit.
