Perhaps the permissions on the driver were messed up, causing it not to load? Whenever you have strange driver problems, running (as root) the command kextload -t /System/Library/Extensions/<foo.kext> to manually load the kext with error reporting is often helpful in figuring out what's wrong and how to fix it.

You're right though, that's strange.
