The USB driver is for devices that support the USB MIDI class spec -- a standard USB-MIDI communication protocol that lets us put a single driver in the OS to support all devices which conform to the spec.

The shipping class-compliant devices I have seen so far are:

Roland UM-880
Evolution keyboard
Event EZbus

There are probably more.
