Names for MIDI sources

Be grateful if someone can tell me, what is the recommended way for an
app to present the user with a list of MIDI source choices?

I know to use MIDIGetNumberOfSources and MIDIGetSource to enumerate
them, but how do we then display the list to the user? They don't seem
to have names.

Also, how can the app remember the user's choice for the next time the
app is run? Remembering the index number of the chosen source seems very
fragile, surely these numbers would change if the user re-configures
their system.
