Jeff, I had wondered why my MidiMan Duo USB I/O started to do this!
When you say "uninstall QT6," rather, is there a single component or
two
somewhere I could move in the time being?
Not really. If you take out the Sound Manager, lots of things won't
even launch (including LoginWindow on 10.1.x systems if I remember
correctly).
I also thought of another work-around: if humanly possible, don't hot
plug your USB audio devices. Once they're plugged in, just leave 'em
there if you can.
Additionally, has there been a public announcement about this issue? I
can
not find anything about it on Apple's site (in the KBase or the QT6
page) as
friend and I are in the same boat with our Duos.

Several very popular USB WebCams with USB Audio support are causing
loginwindow to crash when the are plugged in or unplugged. The crash
happens in a call to CFStringCompare in
HALComponentHelper::DeviceIsNowAvailable(), which is part of a

as
#2973082.
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what string the
HALComponentHelper
is trying to use? I'm wondering if I can stop using the
AppleUSBAudio.kext, and replace it with my own kext which sets
whatever string is missing, to make this crash go away.
This is a bug in the new Sound Manager in the QuickTime 6 Public
Preview. The quick work-around is to uninstall QT6. The harder
work-around would be to replace the QT6 Sound Manager pieces with the
originals.
