Hey All,
From my time on this list it seems as though many of us have similar
challenges in trying to use audio and MIDI under OS X. I think one of the
best aids to this would be the creation of a group for co-development of
classes, functions and algorithms needed or helpful in making
professional-level audio applications for OS X. This would allow for us to
combine our talents and prevent redundant development across applications
(and AudioUnits, etcetera) for features many of us will use. It will also
allow you to add, for free, features that weren't critical to your
application but will make it more attractive to customers. Therefore I am
gauging interest in participation in the development of such a library. I
would like to release this library under the LGPL so that it could be used
in professional audio applications without forcing them to release all
their source code and would encourage aid in development
by developers of such applications. There are of course, possible coding
complications dependent on how the APIs are set up and how your code
works however you will have input into the design of any parts of the
library in which you are interested. I believe that in most cases the
benefits of participation in the development of this library would result
in reduced development time and effort for a developer to reach a
specific feature set.
Considering the array of talent on this list and elsewhere I wouldn't
assume myself to necessarily be the project lead. My personal experience
with CoreAudio and other audio related APIs under OS X is varied and still
somewhat amateurish: I translated the SampleAudioUnit project provided by
Apple into Objective-C, wrote a basic audio editor, have done some work
with MIDI and routing audio between different devices. All of my code for
OS X is in C or Objective-C but this set of libraries would not be
language-specific and could easily have added wrappers and translations to
accommodate your language of choice. If you have interest in this please
contact me at this email address or if the moderators see fit perhaps
some discussion could occur here as this library would in effect be a
supplement and higher level addition to the Apple APIs.
Thanks,
Ben Dagnon
