Well -this is odd. If I log out and then log back in, I can then
successfully unload the KEXT. I don't need to do anything with ">console" or
">exit". I wish I had discovered that about 100 resets ago. Whatever
OSObject is holding on to the engine appears to itself be getting released
during logout. Two-machine debugging with a trap on the
IOAudioEngine::free() method during logout would probably catch the culprit.

Thanks for the feedback. It will save me endless hours of sitting through
reboots.
