This is fine if the engine are clocked by different sources. I agree, that choosing how many IOAudioEngine should be created is not always "clear at the first look". Idea is in the sentence : "Once clocked source corresponds to one engine". For example this is why ususally USB device have multiple engines (there can be many chipsets totally independant inside one device).
