AC3 streaming question

Hi everyone,
I am working on an estimate and I would need to have a rough idea of
the work involved (if any) for an OS X audio device driver to support
AC3 streaming.
Is it a matter of declaring a stream of type
kIOAudioStreamSampleFormatAC3 and do AC-3 encodeing/decoding in the
convertInputSamples/clipOutputSamples routines ?
I know that on Windows a specific device driver is required, and I
was under the impression that AC3 streaming came "for free" on Jaguar.
