So does this mean that QuickTime will NEVER gain the ability to play MIDI
out to external synthesizers? Ever? Even though it was a godsend in OS 9?

I wouldn't say never. Since this was a feature in OS 9, it's conceivable
we could implement this for OSX. I was really talking about *new* features.
