Cool...
I remember coming across a (I think) French group that was working on something like this for FreeMIDI (again, I think) a couple years ago. I do remember for a fact that you could connect machines via Ethernet and send MIDI data between. Of course, no Rendezvous, though.
And i believe there have been several other similar projects.
Why won't airport work? I would think it should do just fine, since 11Mbps is a lot more than the normal MIDI transfer rate. What am I forgetting?
Are you using TCP or UDP? I would break events into real and non-realtime groups and send realtime via UDP and nonrealtime (i.e, more important) via TCP. Maybe even send CCs and similar nonrealtime events via UDP. Using UDP should reduce latency for those events, right?
Cheers

OK, don't flame me too much....
After being inspired by a forum poster over on OSXAudio.com and Apple's
lovely new Rendevous technology I decided to have a go at sending MIDI
over Ethernet.
The result is: iMIDI 0.1b.
It kinda, sorta works but you need decently powered computers connected
on a
LAN (hence Rendezvous) (I had no luck with an old PB G3 233
- unsurprisingly - and Airport is definitely out of the question :-)
However I was able to successfully send MidiClock messages to Reason
through
a 10/100 hub and Reason kept pretty good time.
Anyway if you're interested please give it a whirl and let me know how
it works for you
- I've only got a couple of Macs here that I can try it out on.

Thanks,
Robert.
