Its the fan that cools the *huge* heatsink on the CPU's. Its a three (four?)
speed fan, with loud, very loud and turbine as its sound levels ;-) When you
first power up the machine the fan momentarily goes to high speed and you
can hear all its ferociousness...

Interestingly there *is* a batch of motherboards that have faulty fan
controllers and permanently run the fan on its Boeing-747 setting. These get
warranty replacement - If you check the Apple Knowledgebase I think you can
find theserial numbers of those affected.
Its a shame, but I think you really need to put the new machines in a
soundproof box/room :-(
