Automation with AU View?

What needs to be done to get automation data output when you have a AU View based UI? Using my AU in Logic, if I display the settings in 'control' mode so that the supplied Logic UI is used automation recording works fine. When I switch to my own UI, even though moving a control with the mouse changes the parameter (ie the sound changes) it is not getting recorded as automation data. This seems to be true of all the sample plugins I've looked at that have their own UI. Any pointers?
