I been reading all these mails about plugin interface,
and i will just give my input.
I think the developer should be free to have whatever graphic interface
he chooses,
but the way the control reacts to the mouse should be the same.
I think the the best approach is, that the up/down and left/right
movement with a mouse is very easy to do,
but try a circle or a angled move and that is much more difficult, so
yes a slider is very easy to use.
So if a control is not represented as a slider where there is no
question as how to interact with it, custom controls should behave
similar,
so controls for an EQ band could work like this.
Gain control should be up/down, Freq and Q should be left/right
even if the graphics was a rotating Banana.
The worse controls are a knobs that take the first mouseDown as the new
value, and needs a circular movement
to set the control, try to adjust that when your not looking at the
screen.
PS have a look at the ProTools plugs "Waves Renaissance EQ" for good
behavior, and "Bombfactory SansAmp" for bad behavior.
