While playing with IOMemoryDescriptor, I've tried something tortuous that
happens not only to work, but turns out to be extremely useful for a sound
driver

This is similar to the techniques laid out on the "Virtual Ring Buffer" page, and is also easily implementable under OSX:

Definitely worth checking out if you're interested in these sorts of hacks...

I know someone did an implementation of this for OSX, but I've lost the link.
