I agree that using the mouse to rotate a knob is a mistake. Many music programs
and plug-ins do that, but I *think* most of them use linear movement (the best
way is to add the x and y mouse movements, so that it doesn't matter whether the
user drags vertically or horizontally). Some people get confused the first time
and try to drag in a circle, but it's a lot easier to use with linear movement.

I like knobs--they look better than sliders, and they do usually sit better in
the user interface. Here's one of mine:
