AUGraph wiring question

I'm trying to wire up a DLS Music Device, a Matrix Reverb and a Default
Output Unit.

I start off wiring just the DLS to the DOU and it works fine. I then
insert the reverb
between the two, rewire the inputs/outputs and AUGraphUpdate is giving
me

kAUGraphErr_InvalidConnection

Even though the individual wiring ops all go through cleanly. (return 0)

Is there something I'm missing?

BTW I'm doing this in C.
