Duplicate instrument names in Apple DLS sound set

While trying to populate a pulldown menu with instrument names I've been struggling
with the fact that there are duplicate names in the DLS instrument set. Is this by design?

The pulldown menu code strips out duplicates which makes populating the list correctly
a pain. And how would a user choose between them anyway?

Any thoughts?
