A "typical" software peak meter will at least indicate the recent peak

Yes, and when you have pixels to play with you can do better than what can
be done with typical LED level meters on hardware. To me it is confusing
that (on hardware LED bar meters) the LED showing "peak" looks just like the
LED showing the current level, in spite of the fact the some LEDs beneath
the peak one are off - my eye still catches the peak reading and forgets it
is peak. If you have many many levels this can be ok because the peak
reading clearly reads as a thin line which clearly looks different.
But back to my point - if you have pixels to play with, don't lose out by
trying to make them look like hardware LED bar meters that don't have as
much detail avaliable. The field is still ripe for new ideas to make meters
easy to read at a glance while giving more information when you need it.
This is sort of the other side of the thread that was going on recently
about mouse input. Pixel output is likewise not constrained by familiar
physical examples.
It might be interesting to see meters that fade peak levels out according to
how old they are. After all we have 256 levels of brightness to work with.
(This idea probably came from watching graphical displays such as in
iTunes.)
