I think that using the Defaults Manager (as Brian said) provided by the Mac OS is the right way to go for such things.

I agree - as I wrote yesterday, if there must be a place where stuff is automatically saved, I'd use the places and services already provided by CF and other system APIs. I'd go with CFPreferences.

If, on the other hand, the user explicitly chooses to export a preset to some location (for sharing with others or whatever), then the choice of where to save is no longer a problem, since it's a user request.
