This location, I propose, should be in Library/Preferences/AUPresets.

Looks like a very minimal specification of where to put the presets, and how
to name them, is the best that can be "universally approved." (GRIN)
Whatever folks can agree to is great, as long as there is SOME
Apple-recommended standard location and method.
Just from the standpoint of a user, on both Mac and PC, have seen many
situations where presets saved in program A are either not usable, or a
hassle to use, from program B. If no preset location and method is
agreed-upon, then the same incompatibilities WILL evolve between different
AU hosts.
Such incompatibilites are no big deal, but it gets frustrating when one
needs a preset in program B, and can distictly recall saving an appropriate
preset in program A just last week, but can't get to it.
There are many great musicians that are not great computer operators, at
least in my local circle of friends. One guy routinely misplaces ENTIRE
ALBUMS on his hard drive. He'll work 16 hour days saving all the stuff into
whatever folder the sequencer file dialog happened to be pointing at. Then
when its time to burn the CD, can't recall where he put the songs (GRIN).
We can't write completely idiot-proof programs, but would be nice to design
software to help these guys out as much as possible, whenever possible.
