The DLS synth should be initialized to patch 0 bank 0, so if there's
an instrument in the collection corresponding then it should play.

On a different but similar topic, If I do not load anything, should I get

Are you sending a bank select and program change first before sending
notes to the synth?? I believe it should be initialized to patch 0 bank 0,
but it never hurts to force the patch before sending notes...
