Thom,
I'm not sure about the accuracy your statement that "Apple did NOTHING with
Java for more than 2 years". I wouldn't call moving the WebObjects to Java
and the release of the Cocoa Frameworks in Java "NOTHING". But that's
neither here nor there.
Java is available as a language choice for developers who wish to access
Core Audio- the native audio system in Mac OS X that offers extremely low
latency, multi-channel sound support, built-in digital effects, and
integrated MIDI support. These features require Mac OS X and consequently
are mac specific.
The MIDI component does not rely on QuickTime. It is a brand new
architecture. As for how this stacks up to Java Sound
ask Propellerhead,
Emagic, or Bias why they chose to use Core Audio and Core MIDI for their
professional audio applications.
