I have some code which uses QuickTime to decode audio, and then runs it through a couple of AudioUnits (an effect and the default output).

the first sounds more elegant. (But I've never had to write a Sound Manager output component--thank goodness-so I may be mistaken.)

You're right, it sure is cleaner and more elegant, but it requires the user to install a component and log back in, and I also have never tested QT's APIs for setting sound output components for specific media under Mac OS X. I will let you know if I come up with anything interesting (when I'll have the time to test this...).
