Playing mono sound via the DefaultOutput Audio Unit

Is there a way to have the DefaultOutput Audio Unit play a mono sound on both stereo channels automatically? When I set the Stream Format properties of the DefaultOutput Audio Unit to have only one channel, the sound is only played on the left speaker!

The obvious solution is to set the stream format to have 2 channels, and copy my mono data to the two buffers in my render callback, but I would have prefered to have it done for me by the system!

Anyway, how the DefaultOutput Audio Unit handles the input channels? If I have 3 or more input channels, how are they played on stereo speakers? Is there any way to control that?
