i wanted to share this little experience with you just in case someone runs
into the same problem. i had my midisport 4x4 connected to my apple display

errors (midi
working fine for 1 or 2 minutes then driver reporting some error).
i moved the
midisport to the usb connector ON the Mac and it works perfectly now
I didn't see the original message of this thread, but your noting the
not-recommended part is certainly consistent with your solution. I wish I
knew more about why our products dislike hubs. All I can tell you is it's a
problem which spans operating systems, USB chips, firmware code bases, and
driver code bases. So I'm frankly inclined to blame the hubs, but I am not a
hub expert. I know just enough about USB to call the APIs the smart folks at
Apple build. If you'd like to send me the error messages you were seeing, it
might help us.
There are two speeds in standard USB. I think that some hubs, like
the ones in the keyboards, only run at slow speed (which would be
deadly for MIDI or audio). Also, sharing the bus with slow speed
devices (like keyboards) can also cause problems.
