Jeff and Shaun,

Thanks for the info - that helps a lot - I didn't realize that the DefaultOutputUnit had these smarts.

Is there a property or something I can check to warn users that this fall back has happened? Would kAudioOutputUnitProperty_CurrentDevice work?

They could get confused if they expect one thing and get another.

Thanks again,

Robert.

The Mbox is the Digi USB box right? Digi allows their single-client-only devices to be the various default devices. So, once the System Sound Server in the LoginWindow process latches on to the device, no other process will be able to use it. In this situation, the Default Output Audio Unit in another process won't be able to access the Mbox, so will fall back to the next available device in the HAL's default device search path, which almost always is the built-in hardware.

I've received a screenshot of the user's AMS Audio pane and he's selected the MBox for input and both Default Output and System Output. So how can the DefaultOutputUnit be going to his internal speakers?

Thanks,

Robert.

I've got a ReVision user who's working on a laptop with an MBox selected as his default output (in AMS). But ReVision (which uses the DefaultOutputUnit) is coming out of his built-in speakers.

I went "Huh?" but I'd like a better answer if there is one?

Thanks,

Robert.
