This is an opportunity to bring up a question I've been thinking about for a bit now... Have you thought about adding a way to indicate the speaker arrangement for multi-channel devices?

Yes - that is in the Panther version of AMS and is a property of the device, so the user can describe where her speakers are.

My preference would be nice to throw this into the AudioStreamBasicDescription structure so *any* multi-channel buffer can carry around its assumptions about which speakers are represented by which channels. There's that mReserved field in ASBD just begging to be used :)

Nope - See CoreAudio/CoreAudioTypes.h in the Panther headers - we're saving the reserved field for something else:) - so make sure you all set this to zero!

We will have something that can do all of this in the Panther release of the SDK (though I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "RAW")

The code we're working on (hopefully this all gets done!), will also show you how to use the matrix mixer to down mix from different channel layouts, as well as both encoding and decoding ADTS files that have quite a few different surround formats for AAC (various flavours from mono to 8 channels).

So, all in all, could be interesting I think

For audio quality evaluations I need to play back 5 channel PCM (AIF, WAVE, or RAW) files. Is there a simple player for MacOS X that supports such multi-channel playback (shareware/freeware/relatively cheap and simple software)?

If not I guess I have to write my own (hopefully not).

Does anyone know more? Thanks,
Chris
