Robert,
All of these features are very doable by connecting several matrix mixers
together in the right way, along with the built-in lo-hi shelf and parametric
EQ AudioUnits. Also, in Panther, the stereo mixer will mix
stereo sources (but not in the WWDC seed - sorry ;-)
Although, the matrix mixer may not present the controls in the way you're
used to seeing them, it's fairly straightforward to write a "wrapper"
AudioUnit which internally uses matrix mixers, etc., publishing the
parameters and busses in exactly the way you describe...

As I've written before :-) I'm not happy with my mixing options as
an AU host developer. The Stereo mixer is too basic and the new
Matrix mixer (which I guess we can discuss now that Bill has
mentioned it :-)) is too "matrix" for lack of better description.
What I'm looking for is a mixer that is somewhat akin to real-world
mixers. I want:
Stereo/mono inputs
per input:
input gain fader
input balance/pan (balance for stereo, pan for mono)
send levels
pre/post fader switches for the sends (not essential
but nice to have)
Some basic EQ (lo/mid/hi) would also be nice but not essential
multiple stereo effect send busses (say 4)
Effect Return busses if it's technically feasible (see below)
Stereo master out.
The way I see it working is that this mixer could be coupled with
the stereo mixer to provide a full featured mixing environment.
Seems easier than trying to embed the send effect loop within the
mixer - but if I'm wrong I'm happy to hear it :-)
As I've demonstrated here many times I'm not talented enough to
build this myself or even have much idea about how to get started.
So I'm interested in working on a SourceForge type project with a
BSD-type license (because I want to build commercial apps with it)
with a few others - I'd probably be able to fill in some of the
blanks :-). It wouldn't need a GUI I think because hosts would
happily provide their own (especially if it is often coupled with
the Stereo mixer).
Is anyone interested in helping out?
Thanks,
Robert.
