Hello,
I've been having problems with line input getting a
buzz and ring modulator-like effect that makes it
sound like an evil robot voice. The buzz seems to be
at about
a task switching frequency?
I've seen some mention of inadvertent robot voices on
the archives for this list, but didn't see the
followups. Is this a known problem, or something no
one has seen much of?
More context:
I'm using a MOTU 828mk2 as my audio interface, and
using MAX 4.2/MSP on OSX 10.2.6; 12" G4 powerbook.
The program is taking input from an adc, detecting
silence, and switching modes based on that. One mode
(when line in is not silent) records incoming sound
data to files, while sending it out to 12 channels,
with slightly different delays. When line-in is
silent, it switches modes to play back stored sound
files randomly on the different channels.
The problem seems to occur when switching from
playback files mode to recording & sending mode.
Rebooting will eliminate the robot voice, for a little
while, until a mode switch or two later.
Even more context, for the curious:
I'm doing this to program the audio for Tim Black's
Voice of Fire installation for Burning Man. He's
modulating a set of ionized propane flames with a
high-current audio signal, resulting in the flames
becoming speakers. More information here:

I would appreciate any leads here.
Thanks,
Simran
