Batch Audio File Conversion Utility?

Does anyone know of a good quality batch-oriented utility which can convert
a batch of audio files from one sample rate/wordlength/format to another?
3Barbabatch2 comes highly recommended from some folks, and has a great
reputation, but it is OS 9 only.
If a good OSX version of such a utility does not already exist, maybe I9ll
write my own.
If I kept it fairly simple, and since this is not a real-time playback
application, I thought this might not be exceedingly complicated or
problematic. It might even be straightforward and fun to write.
If such a utility exists for OS X, though, I9d like to know about it.
Given the fairly powerful CoreAudio API, I wonder if writing a somewhat
limited audio converter, as a first attempt, would be extremely difficult.
(I9m an experienced software engineer, but not a CoreAudio expert by any
means).
Suggestions, speculations, comments, and ideas welcome!
