i heard it was due to copyright concerns...

I can understand that the API developed by Propellerhead is protected. I could not understand if the idea of communicating audio in real time between processes were patented. I'm not a specialist of copyrights law so I think designing such a system with its own API would not infringe any patent. Once again I'm not a specialist, so I may be wrong.
