someone will come up with without the 1-1 restriction.
Sure... but this is primarily a job for the host app - my point was
that we have the work done from our end I believe...
we could define another audio unit type if we wanted to distinguish
between
more run of the mill format conversions and musical effect type
conversions

This seems like merely a semantic difference. So is presenting
yourself as
an AudioUnit Effect an implicit guarantee that you are a 1-1 plug-in?
I don't want to change this assumption of the aufx type of plugins - it
is a known quantity and covers most of the existing effects (with the
only allowance being made for plugins that have potential differences
between numChannels). It seems to me a reasonable guarantee/contract to
provide...
I think it isn't just a syntactic difference but a semantic one:)
For instance we publish the AUConverter as an aufc audio unit - but the
function of this unit is primarily of a utilitarian nature. If we
shared this component Type with those types of units that do something
interesting to your audio (like time stretching for instance), then
there isn't a way for the host apps to filter out the utility
functionality from that a user would I think prefer to see in this
space.
