I agree with Bill that this shouldn't be a host's problem. There are properties for render quality and there are slower and faster computers. You cannot assume that your AU can't complete its processing in real time or, for that matter, that it can.

What, on the other hand, might be useful is some functionality so that a host can tell CoreAudio that it is doing offline processing. This would have the only effect that CoreAudio wouldn't create high-priority threads for AUs, since it's not a problem if they take a bit longer to do their job.
