Thanks for the hint :D

Now, as I understand it, reading the Synthtest source... once the graph is
started, the host can basically sit back and take things easy - no
intervention is needed at host level.

Question is, that being the case, how can I step through and debug the
graph flow, if it never touches either my code or host code? Will compiling
one of the example effects and breaking in on the effect's render code work?
