user space audio driver

Hi,

is it possible to write a virtual audio device driver that works in user space? The PhantomAudioDriver example is a nice basis, but I'd need to call higher level APIs in my case. Does an audio device need to be a kernel driver?

I would like to write a virtual audio driver that does not need any hardware access at all but instead call some higher level OS X APIs. Also, debugging kernel drivers is a real pain and I want to stay in user space as much as possible.

Thanks,
Stefan
