[OT] Linear PCM amplitude

[This is very off topic...]

I'm trying to understand the format of linear PCM data for a college project my kid is doing. The primary object is to show the amplitude of a given buffer which we'll turn into a an activity meter much like the "input level" within the System Preferences Sound control panel.

if it's not a bother can someone point us to a URL or give us a quick explanation of how to extract this info from each sample?
