thanks for all the responses, I think I'm getting closer to having a grip on the problem.
I'm sure that what I need is an aumu because I need MIDI notes and I need audio input. so that issue is solved, but I do thank you all for the suggestion of the aumf BECAUSE when I look in my AU headers (particularly in AUComponent.h, line 76) I see the following:

kAudioUnitType_MusicEffect = FOUR_CHAR_CODE('aumx'),

which is leading me to believe that I have some outdated headers.
where do I find the latest and greatest AU files online?

finally I gather from all of your responses that when my aumu in logic is graced with the side-chain popup menu and no setting in the side-chain popup menu yields any kindof audio callbacks to me, that this is an issue of LAP and not of mine. I thank you for notifying the emagic people. who is responsible for this at emagic? I would like to verify the roots of this problem before informing our support staff in berlin to forward support calls to hamburg.

thanks again in advance!

I full agree here and I sent a mail to emagic.

But if the problem with Logic is confirmed, and if you work for a well-known Audio company that gets regularly flamed in various BBS by angry users because your AU support is quite late, and you alreday announced August availability, what is your options here ? ;-)

Yes...

But a MIDI Effect is *not* a note based AU, but the APIs are there for those who want to handle the modification of an effects rendering through real time (and not persistent) changes - as is explained in some detail in the doc that is awaiting approval (its long) about this :)

Lets not blur concepts here...

I would file a bug with logic and get them to fix this properly

I think the problem may be in Logic : for 'aumu', Logic display the "sidechain" popup in the 'aumu' has any input bus, but it seems they never set a connection or callback for it. So, no input buffer...
I did not fill a bug for it (I have already 3 in the pipe, and it was just a quick experiment so I was not sure about it, but it seems to confirm the problem).

I think the only choice now is to write a MIDIEffect.

Is there any host that support 'aumu' with input busses ?
