That's why I was surprised at your implication that such
an AU exists. I would think that internal threading would
be considered pathological since, at the very least, it
would undo the efforts of any hosts (e.g. Logic, Digital
Performer, etc.) to perform load balancing.

does not permit the host to put the render calls into
threads? Wouldn't such an AU fail to work in Logic (or
digital performer, or cubase if it was to support AU's)?
No - I was thinking more about it the other way... If the rendering
itself is threaded, but particular AU's are internally using threads,
then by threading the rendering process (and being able to "do more"),
you may then cause these threaded units to not have enough time to do
their thing - you may end up robbing peter to pay paul - does that make
sense?
