Mark,
Depending on where you're at mathematically, the book by Stein, "Digital
Signal Processing: A Computer Science Perspective," Wiley is a good
introduction for non-engineers. Probably a Junior level CS course. At a
little lower level is "DSP First" by McClellan (sp?) et. al. The title is
distinctive enough to find it. It comes with a CD with neat pictures and
demos. Probably a Sophomore level book. On the practical side, there's
"Digital Audio with Java," by Craig Lindley, Prentice-Hall, with loads of
examples and code. Ken Pohlman's (maybe Polhman, he's the same one who writes
for "Sound & Vision") "Principals of Digital Audio" is a nice compendium of
info. It does help if you know a little DSP before you read it. There are
some technical books by Zolzer (with an umulat on the o), "Digital Audio
Signal Processing" (I think) and "DAFX" about effects. However, they are
non-trivial. You can get most of these and look a bit more info at
www.bookpool.com. They seem to have the best prices on mass-market technical
books. Hope this helps.
