midiunits?

Hi all, I'm a newbie and I have a newbie question...

I want to create some plugins to process MIDI, like arpeggiators, etc.
My hope is that you could just insert this into the MIDI path in a sequencer

(in particular, Logic), and it would work pretty much like an audio insert
effect. I hear Cubase SX allows for this, but I assume that is a custom
API.

Is this possible? If so, are there any examples or pointers to how I
might go about it?

Thanks, smeet
