I meant this to go to the list. (Sorry, Urs, didn't mean to send it
straight to you...I hate not being able to just hit Reply and have it
go to the list!) Anyway, here's my question...

this up is that I want to use Zoyd etc with linear knobs! ;-)
Okay okay okay. I am now convinced. Got much feedback / criticism on
that topic. CAUGui will do linear by default and get a knob-mode
property that can be set by, hmm, which way ever turns out to be
used. A global host setting would be nice.
Cheers,

We plan on adding the ability to select knob styles (vertical,
horizontal, rotary) to some our plug-ins. I agree that it would be
nice to be able to ask the host what style they employ, in order to
default ours to the same style. For now, we'll default to vertical
(since that seems the overwhelming preference). Personally, I love
rotary knobs. Clicking on the right side of a knob and moving it
upwards, only to see that side of the knob scroll downward just seems
weird to me. I thought the whole point of having knobs was to
simulate real knobs. Real knobs turn. My favorite rotary knob looks
like one of those volume knobs, with a little dent where your finger
is supposed to go. Anyway, just my opinion (my boss disagrees :-)).
Still, we'll be adding it as an option, and being able to ask the host
what they use would be better than picking a default at compile time,
don't you think?
Oh, one other thing...I've seen two styles of rotary knobs: one where
the position of the knob is absolute (i.e., a simple click at the
3-o'clock position moves the knob to there, and it tracks wherever you
point; the second is "relative", more like a real-world knob, in that
it only turns as you turn it, relative to the place you clicked. I'm
using the second option now, but does anyone out there use or prefer
the first (absolute position) method? It seems to have the one
advantage of going exactly to where you point, despite the fact no
real-world knob turns that way. Anyone...?
Howard
