Interesting to note that I saw this in the midi.org site under the XMF
link:
<snip> instruments. The MIDI files and the DLS files are bound together
in the XMF file, rather than travelling separately where they can get
lost. (This approach, which allows for reliable, rich-sounding music at
very reasonable file sizes, was pioneered by Beatnik, Inc., who led the
MMA working group that developed the XMF design.) Type 0 and Type <snip>
... pioneered by Beatnik? Have they heard of the .MOD file format?
Granted, most MOD variants don't use MIDI note data, but the concept
isn't exactly rocket science and this system has been around for years.
Then again, I saw in another article that Beatnik received substantial
'investement', so I guess the usual venture capital showboating went on.
:o)
Regards,
Jose.

* Is the XML specification for the .mid file format publicly
available?
Is this the relevant page:
http://www.midi.org/xmf/index.shtml
If so, the standard appears to be available for $19.95 + postage.
