Can you provide a more concrete example of the failure? I just coded up
a few experiments with kAudioDevicePropertyStreamFormatMatch and I
didn't see it return anything by a valid sample rate in the returned
ASBD when I was using an iMic.

I cannot find any further discussion of it.
It appears that Panther returns a ZERO sample rate for
AudioDeviceGetProperty ( ...,
kAudioDevicePropertyStreamFormatMatch, ...)
while earlier versions returned a reasonable match.
This may only affect USB devices such as the iMic.
I believe that this new bug is the cause of some failures of PortAudio
code
under Panther. Several applications are using PortAudio, including
Audacity,
JSyn, PD, etc. so I would like to know how to fix this.
Thanks,
Phil Burk
