Hi James,
I made a call for this ages ago - but I believe this is finally coming
in the QuickTime 6.4 update. The Apple Output unit will be configurable
as an Input unit. It seems a little wonky but apparently it'll work
great :-)

Though I have tested my hand at development, I am certainly not as
skilled as many of you all. That being said, I believe there is a
need for an Audiounit that simply accepts an audio input and publishes
its output (for use with other apps and AUs). The main usage is for
applications like Numerology (http://www.five12.com) that host
audiounits. I would love to be able to run my external signals
through the audiounit effects but currently have no way to do this. I
am sure there is some crafty fellow out there who could make a quick
little audio in AU, so please, for the good of the community :-),
knock one up and release it.
Either way, please keep up the good work.
Thanks!
James
