The new 'aupn' Audio Unit type (kAudioUnitType_Panner) deals with those.
See Bill Stewart's message of 10/3/03 with subject "Re: AU N to M
channels guideline (and Validation tool).

So what about 'panner' AUs? (say one 2-channel bus in, one 5-channel
bus out)

OK - I'm just trying to conjure up an example of how to break this
and I can't... Seems like a good idea to do it this way.
This implies a certain channel relationship between in and out
capabilities on the same element ID...

Art,
This is a bit tricky as the num channels property is only really
generally used to describe a common channel capability across all
busses/elements.
This still seems like just a mistake in the SDK to me. Will
AUBase::SupportedNumChannels be modified in the next SDK revision to
have
an Element argument so that channel configurations can be queried
per-element?
I have another example that might make more sense to you: Let's say
you
have a vocoder that is designed for stereo carrier input and mono
modulator input. Currently there's no way to describe that setup
unless
you hack the SDK to make SupportedNumChannels() bus-aware.
