Does anyone know Steinberg's plans concerning AudioUnit
support in Cubase SX on Mac OS X?

Is it a "strategy" to exclude it or are they just lazy?

From looking at the different plugin hosts, I can see kinda scheme:

Crossplatform plugin hosts with pc versions: tend to support mostly VST only, on all platforms

Mac only hosts: commonly AU plus additional plugin formats (neglecting 9/classic here)

I think Steinberg will push their VST development first, and what I've heard during beer with one of their developers sounded very promising. If VST3 gets anywhere close to what was said there, AU support would be a no-brainer to add to that engine (or write a wrapper, which would basically be an Opcode-converter, so my impression). Well, that was back in May or so and not official, so I can't say for sure.

I think it would make a difference if users claimed demand. Unfortunately, I don't think users have strong reasons to do so.

Cheers,

;) Urs
