Hi -
I'm interested in porting an existing OS 9 MIDI app to OS X. This
freeware app loads firmware updates into various musical hardware
products from Digitech/Johnsons Amplification. Currently it is carbonized
and ready to go, except for the low-level MIDI spcific portions.
I looked into this about a year ago and didn't find any documentation
beyond the header files. In my explorations today, it doesn't seem the
situation has changed much.
While the information in the headers is sufficient for understanding any
given call, the most basic meta-information about how to get started is
nowhere to be found.
Where are the answers to the very basic, very stupid questions such as:
"Which one of these well-documented functions must be called first? Which
must be called second? In what order do I tear down when my program exits?
Imagine having complete documentation of the OS 9 APIs, but nothing which
says "First, call InitGraf."
In short, unless I've missed something in a big way, the documentation
for Core MIDI is an embarrasment. How is there supposed to be MIDI
software on OS X, commercial or free, if there's nowhere to start? (And
if I -have- missed it, the question becomes "Why is it so well hidden?!?")
Any help welcomed, and apologies for my testiness. After getting the bug
to work on something which has been put off several times before due to
lack of documentation, and after searching around for an hour or more
(AGAIN), and coming up empty (AGAIN), well, yes, I am a little irritable
tonight.
