The only real problem that I see with the idea is sheets are attached
to a
window, and the window that the AUView is contained within is not
specific
to the AUView. Take for example AudioUnitHosting, where the entire
application interface, and also the current AUView, are all in one
window.
If you tried out your sheet-producing AU in there, I'm sure you'd see
what
I'm talking about. The result is weird and inappropriate because the
sheet is attached to the app's window in a way that doesn't seem
attached
to the plugin view. If you look at the Apple Human Interface
Guidelines,
you'll also see that your idea is a misuse of sheets, basically
because of
what I'm talking about.

Yes, but to my understanding of the Mac World, AUHosting isn't the best
example of User Interface design anyway. It ties together stuff that
doesn't really belong together. It doesn't have the purpose to look &
feel good. Try any fancy custom user interface in AUHosting. Ugly.
Windows like AUHosting's are not common in our biz. If AUHosting is the
only host that screws it up, I don't care, nobody uses it except
developers. (And I still believe it does not look too bad...)
Despite Logic (like Spark) having a Toolbar, Sheets still look very
cool (or funky, if you prefer that term). And I have a certain use for
that, it's not just "look what I can do".
I'm really not interested in how hosts clutter the view with their
stuff (If it does not belong to the plugin they may better keep out!).
I want to know if there are any technical reasons not to use Sheets.
That's all. Otherwise I'll open an OverlayWindow :-b - This is just
more expensive, because I have to block some events...
Reg. Apple Human Interface Guidelines, sorry, I already provide
"strange" custom controls (and it's getting weirder every day). In
fact, my Sheets come closer to them than most of my other controls, I
bet.
